On the evening of February 7 in New York City, the stars gathered on Fifth Avenue for the grand opening of Chanel’s first Watches & Fine Jewelry flagship boutique in the United States. Attending the glamorous event were Michelle Williams, Katie Holmes, Kerry Washington, Elizabeth Olsen, Zazie Beetz, and many more. But one celeb in particular shined bright in an all-black, sheer dress topped with a long raven coat: America Ferrera, who has been the name on everybody’s lips since her recent Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for Barbie.

There was yet another star in the mix—only this time, it was around Ferrera’s neck: the Chanel Fil De Comète collar, made of 18-karat white gold and diamonds. “It felt like a bold statement,” Ferrera said of the piece. Indeed, the night called for a more-is-more approach to jewelry—so working with her stylist, Karla Welch, Ferrera topped off the comet-inspired necklace with a pair of Chanel’s dazzling Étoile Filante 1932 earrings. “The dress and the jewelry really complemented one another, but we’re letting the diamonds shine and be the center of attention tonight.” Of course, they could only go so far in outshining Ferrera, who, after starring in such film favorites as The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Real Women Have Curves, is finally getting the attention from the Academy that she deserves. Here, the actress discusses her upcoming projects, her fashion plan for the Oscars, and her most prized pieces of jewelry.

February 8, 2024 Jennifer Comments Off on America Ferrera Talks Her Feature Directorial Debut and the Diamonds That Make Her Dance

It’s been a big year for America Ferrera: The “Barbie” star just received her first Academy Award nomination, and her directorial debut is now in development at Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures.

Now, the actor, producer and author is being honored by the University of Southern California’s School of Dramatic Arts (SDA) as the recipient of its second annual Multihyphenate Award. The award celebrates artists whose career embraces versatility and innovation in the multifaceted landscape of the entertainment world.

“I’m honored to receive the Multihyphenate Award,” said Ferrera. “Since my days at USC I have had the privilege to explore my many passions and interests. I’ve created my own path by staying true to all the different things I care about and love doing. We do not need to limit our creative lives to neat job titles. I hope students feel inspired to explore the diverse facets within themselves in order to find their own unique paths.”

“America Ferrera’s remarkable journey in the entertainment industry is a testament to the transformative power of storytelling,” said Dr. Emily Roxworthy, Dean of the USC School of Dramatic Arts. “As the recipient of the Multihyphenate Award, America embodies the spirit of innovation and resilience that we aim to instill in our students. Her impact goes beyond the screen, inspiring the next generation of storytellers to embrace diversity, creativity, and the limitless possibilities within the realm of dramatic arts.”

Last year, Mindy Kaling was honored with the inaugural award in an event that marked the commencement of SDA’s Multihyphenate Masterclass Series. The series, which has included Colman Domingo, Judith Light and more, aims to empower students with the skills and knowledge needed to sustain careers as working artists in entertainment today.

Ferrera will be feted on Feb. 11 in USC’s Bing Theatre, in an event also featuring a Q&A session moderated by the head of USC’s Dramatic Writing program Luis Alfaro, a distinguished Chicano playwright and associate professor. The discussion will cover Ferrera’s multifaceted career and the art of being a multihyphenate artist. The event is exclusively open to current USC students.

America Ferrera‘s directorial debut I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter is in development at Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures from screenwriter Linda Yvette Chávez. The film, based on Erika Sánchez’s New York Times bestselling novel of the same name, was previously set at Netflix.

The story follows Julia Reyes, a teen with a sharp tongue, a fierce wit and big dreams of becoming a famous writer, somewhere far, far away from Chicago and her traditional Mexican immigrant parents who just can’t understand her love for Whitman, Dickinson and the Ramones. They wish she was more like Olga, Julia’s sister, now eternally perfect since her tragic death. As Julia seeks to break free of her oppressive home, she tries to uncover her sister’s truth, and in the process gains a deep understanding of the wounds her family carries.

Producers include Doreen Wilcox Little, MACRO Film Studio’s Charles D. King and Poppy Hanks, Aevitas Creative Management’s David Kuhn and Anonymous Content. Sánchez and MACRO Film Studio’s Greta Talia Fuentes will executive produce. Anonymous Content optioned the rights to the book under the company’s first-look deal with Aevitas Creative Management.

Ferrera is coming off a busy award season promoting her most recent role in the hit Greta Gerwig feature film Barbie, which earned the actress her first Academy Award nomination. Additionally, Ferrera recently starred in the Craig Gillespie-directed film Dumb Money, based on the 2021 book The Antisocial Network. She is well known for bringing to life Betty Suarez in the ABC dramedy Ugly Betty, a role that earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2007.

The project reunites Ferrera with Chávez following their collaboration on Netflix’s Gentefied, a TV series co-created by the latter and executive produced by the pair.

Ferrera is represented by CAA and Peikoff & Mahan; Chávez is represented by The Mission Entertainment, WME and Del Shaw. Author Sánchez is represented by The Gersh Agency, Trellis Literary Management and Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz.

January 23, 2024 Jennifer Comments Off on America Ferrera and “Barbie” Nominated at 2024 Academy Awards

It didn’t take long for America Ferrera to find the personal connection in the speech she delivers as Gloria in the box-office smash “Barbie.”

“I think when we’re not historically meant to be in a room, it’s very difficult to show up in those spaces as your whole self,” she says on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “Because you are taught to be grateful, you’re in the room. When you’re coming from a position of having a debt you owe to whoever opened that door for you and let you in, there’s this unspoken reminder that ‘you’re here somehow as a favor.’ And if we opened the door to let you in, we can open the door and let you out. Getting in the room is not the end of the work; it’s only the beginning.”

On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we sit down with Emmy winner Ferrera to discuss her blockbuster year, including two outstanding performances in “Barbie” and “Dumb Money.” She discusses her journey through Hollywood following “Ugly Betty” and what to expect from her upcoming directorial feature debut. The Roundtable discusses the awards season kick-off with the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle. Listen below.

Directed by Greta Gerwig, “Barbie” follows the titular character (played by Margot Robbie) as she explores the real world and encounters Gloria (Ferrera), a Mattel employee who gives Barbie some life lessons on a woman’s place in the real world. “Dumb Money,” based on the book “The Antisocial Network” by Ben Mezrich, tells the true story of a group of amateur investors from the Reddit page WallStreetBets who banded together to put the squeeze on at least two hedge funds that had bet that GameStop shares would fall. In the Craig Gillespie film, Ferrera plays Jenny, a single mother and nurse who bets on the wrong horse.

Fererra says the “Dumb Money” character was unlike anything she had played before: A white woman from Pennsylvania who voted for Donald Trump twice. Ferrera was “fascinated” by the role. “It was another moment in my career of like, ‘oh my gosh, I’m being considered for a role that wasn’t written as a Latina,” she says. “And that was a shock. What fascinated me about that character was our assumptions of what a working-class, struggling mother feels and believes in the world. I genuinely feel for that character. It wasn’t about money. She was being driven by a sense of an idea. That was her reward — the sense of power and belonging to an idea.”

Ferrera’s rise to prominence began with the 2002 film “Real Women Have Curves,” which then led to her role in the groundbreaking TV series “Ugly Betty,” where she portrayed the endearing and relatable Betty Suarez. She became the first (and still only) Latina to win the lead comedy actress award at the Emmys in 2007. She’s also the only one to be nominated in the category more than once.

In addition, Ferrera also drops hints about the chances of an “Ugly Betty” reboot and her excitement regarding her upcoming directorial feature debut, “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter,” which will shoot in 2024.
