America Ferrera is spilling details on her experience making “Barbie”! Access Hollywood’s Zuri Hall spoke to the actress, before the SAG-AFTRA strike started, about her first reaction to reading the movie’s script and how she relates to the film’s themes. She also gushed over working with Margot Robbie and said she “gasped” seeing her as Barbie for the first time, saying, “She looked more like Barbie than Barbie!” Plus, America dished on how her kids, 5 and 3, have come to understand her work on the movie. “They’re still too young to really know what it means, but they did visit Barbieland, and they think that when I’m not with them, I live and work in Barbieland. So, if I’m at work and I FaceTime them, they’re like, ‘Can we see the Barbie house?'” she shared. “Barbie” is out in theaters now.

America Ferrera is all dolled up.
Or, well, I imagine she is. We’re on the phone together and it’s nerve-wracking, talking to someone who ostensibly shaped my childhood.
Real Women Have Curves, Ugly Betty, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Ferrera was a north star of sorts for young Latinas unused to seeing their stories so lovingly portrayed on screen. There’s a complexity in occupying this status as a “body-positive” icon before body-positivity entered mainstream consciousness – especially during a time where near-emaciation seemed to be the goal to strive toward. Ferrera’s work functioned like a salve against rigid Eurocentric beauty standards. These weren’t soppy narratives full of empty words about self-acceptance. Instead they faced down a judgemental society and dared it to say anything, featuring characters who recognized that they deserved more than loving themselves “in spite of.”
And now, she plays a pivotal role in the Barbie movie.

Ryan Gosling has seen his Barbie costar America Ferrera’s TED Talk, much to her endearing surprise.
“You watched my TED Talk?” a stunned Ferrera asks during EW’s Around the Table with the cast and director Greta Gerwig (above), conducted prior to the actors’ strike.
“I love your TED Talk,” Gosling replies in earnest, calling it powerful and prompting a moved reaction from the Ugly Betty Emmy winner and activist.
Titled “My Identity Is a Superpower,” the moving soliloquy about knowing and loving who you are within a non-inclusive, repressive system is not unlike her big monologue in Barbie.
